Recently I heard someone say, I am not willing to participate in the recession. However, if your boss tells you that you’re laid off, telling him I am not willing to participate in the recession will not get you your job back. But if you have a recession proof business, it’s not something that will effect you.
Most Americans surveyed by a 2008 Fortune Magazine poll believe the economy in the United States is on a downward spiral. They agree if a recession isn’t here already, it soon will be. The poll of 1,000 Americans found that:
18 percent are somewhat worried about losing their job in the next year, and 8 percent are very worried
65 percent believe U.S. economic conditions are getting worse
57 percent believe the United States is heading into a recession in the next 12 months
48 percent have been cutting back their spending in the past 12 months
15 percent have not been able to keep up with their credit card payments, and
9 percent have not been able to keep up with their mortgage, rent or other loan payments
Of course, if you have a recession proof business, these statistics would not be a concern to you. What exactly is a recession proof business? There are certain industries where despite the economy, you can be successful. Most people feel that the health industry is recession proof. The Baby Boomers will be retiring soon and more people are seeking health alternatives instead of prescription medication with all the side-effects.
Did you know bestselling author Paul Zane Pilzer-a world-renowned economist, presidential advisor, college professor, and entrepreneur said in 2002, the Wellness Revolution defined an industry and outlined an emerging $200 billion industry. Today, wellness has grown to $500 billion and it’s still just getting started, offering even greater entrepreneurial opportunities. In the next ten years, an additional $1 trillion of the U.S. economy will be devoted to providing healthy people with products to maintain their health.” If people have products that help them with their health, they will not cut that out of their budget. That’s a recession proof business and with this type of predicted growth, this is a business that you could devote your time and effort knowing it will be there through good and bad times.
Just indicating the health industry of course covers a wide range of choices. Within that industry, experts suggest that a home based business can be a recession proof business. In poor economic times, people crave new business opportunities, hoping to stabilize their income. Consistently, home based businesses have grown during the “down” periods.
Nutrilite took off in 1945 during the economic decline immediately following World War II. Shaklee and Neolife fared well in the post-Korean War slump. Amway got a good start building with the slump in 1958. Mary Kay started with the downturn in the 1960s. This theory held true in 1992 when Alliance, Kaire, Life Plus, and a number of other companies started up and boomed. Others like Herbalife went into hyper growth due to the same recession and became billion dollar companies. During these touch economic times, these businesses were recession proof businesses.
However, when seeking a recession proof business that you can start building so you’re not worrying about when the next shoe will drop, you need to choose the right one. Right now the market place has many home based businesses and it’s difficult to choose the right one.
Choosing a home based business that doesn’t meet up with the criteria is not a recession proof business because if you can’t be successful in the business, then you’re right back to where you started from and looking again.
The recession proof business I would recommend is TriVita. Why? Because it met my criteria and I did quite a bit of research seeking my own recession proof business. TriVita is a solid company with over 50 nutritional products and they spend millions of dollars generating customers for us with their unique cooperative marketing model. Many people will argue that it’s not a start up.
Why do people seek start ups? Because they feel that if they’re in the beginning, they are able to make more money in that particular business. Think . . . Microsoft, Dell, Tahitian Noni Juice; Herbalife, etc. The problem with start ups is you take a chance. A BIG risk and do you really want a risk when we have a recession hovering over us already? In addition, many start ups and new businesses have many obstacles to overcome that they can’t even anticipate and many will not be able to fulfill the dreams they promise, and worse, close their doors after you’ve poured your money into them (I know – been there; done that).
However, the draw of a start up is the potential to get in at the beginning and make more money than with an established business, but we are in a unique position. We have both. We have a business that has a 10 year proven track record backed by a 38 year old multi-million dollar media giant with a product about to be launched that is expected to be a billion dollar product.
This is going to sound cliche – but it’s true. Timing couldn’t be better. The economy is not doing well and this is when home based businesses take off. We are in a company where you can build it 3 different ways for success. We are not a 1 product company and we have a billion dollar product about to be launched with a massive media campaign and 30 city tour where TriVita is spending the money to introduce a new product to your customers and let them know about the opportunity.
If you’re seeking a recession proof business, I would take a closer look at TriVita. If you’re working full time and don’t have time to build a business, you can just acquire customers from the company to generate an additional stream of income. If you do have the extra time, you can build it that much faster especially with the launch of the new product.
TriVita – it just makes sense.
Call me so I can interview you and we can see if TriVita is the right fit for you and you’re the right fit for my team.
